In ancient India, Gurukuls were the hubs for learning. Students lived with the masters who were called Rishis.
They learned the principles, not only by memorizing, but by applying them in real life situations. The focus of educational system was on development of practical wisdom rather than on accumulation of information. The curriculum integrated moral values. It was this unique way of teaching that made the students achieve success in both the material and spiritual spheres of life.
The message of Bhagwan Swaminarayan “pravartaniya Sadvidya” and the ancient system of gurukul inspired Sad guru Swami Shreevallabh dasji and Shastri Swami Dharmajivan dasji to re-establish the ancient system of education and laid the foundation of the Gurukul (first in the Swaminarayan Sampraday in Samvat 2000, Jetha Vad 8th Wednesday 14-06-1944 at nine o’clock) at Bhuj.
Gradually, the great vision manifested in reality as other branches at Mandvi, Gandhidham, Rampar, Raapar, Manakuva, Narayanpar, Bhuj-Mirjapar and a college hostel in Bhuj.
The gurukul SSGM is spread over 12 hectors of land and it run under Shree Narnarayan Dev Bhuj, which is the seventh gurukul of the Bhuj temple whose foundation stone was laid on Monday, 28-4-2003, 12th day of Chaitra Vad, which was then formally inaugurated by Mahant Swami Hariswarup dasji on 2004.SSGM is presently run with the blessing of swami Shreehari dasji and directed by swami Devkrushna dasji.
